The idea of setting up a Railway Museum in Ostrava was established in 2000, when the Czech Railways, a.s. Transport Infrastructure Administration Ostrava in the framework of the reconstruction of a 19th century historical building in the Ostrava-střed Railway Station proposed to use the local spaces for museum purposes.
The effort to document the history of the railroad in the Ostrava region from the arrival of the first train to Ostrava and Bohumín on 1 May 1847 to the present day was the thought of the regional railway museum. The original wishes and ideas were realized in 2011. During the Czech Raildays fair, a Representative of the Railway Companies in the Ostrava region was approached. The interest in these wishes and ideas was welcomed, and therefore the first steps of the founders were taken to create the conditions for the establishment of the museum.
On 25th of April 2012, the Founders met the proposed members of the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board. They agreed that the new museum will also deal with the history of railway traffic on the slats of manholes and shafts as the historical specifics of the Ostrava region. The interest of the present participants in the preparation and elaboration of the basis for the registration of the museum at the Regional Court was confirmed. It was decided to establish a non-profit organization - a public benefit organization called Moravian-Silesian Railway Museum, o.p.s.. As the Director of the Museum Mr. Vojtěch Hermann was elected.
The General Benefit Society “Železniční muzeum Moravskoslezské o.p.s” was established by the Founding Contract of 11 June 2012. It was created on 26th of September 2012 by the registration in the register of public benefit companies at the Regional Court in Ostrava in Section O - File No. 1086.
The founders of the museum are:
Mr. Vojtech Hermann
Ing. Jaroslav Adamec
Ing. Radek Podstawka
Ing. Martina Baronová
The establishment of the Railway Museum is also supported by the Statutory City of Ostrava, the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Railway Infrastructure Administration, the State Organization and the Czech Railways, a.s.
